Mayumi Tendo (天堂 真弓, Tendō Mayumi) is a minor character in Battle Royale.
Backstory[]
Not much is known about Mayumi Tendo. She may have been mean-spirited, since she, Fumiyo Fujiyoshi and Yoshimi Yahagi locked Noriko Nakagawa in a restroom stall that had insulting things written on a wall about her. If Mayumi was anything like her novel and manga counterparts, then she would've been engaged in telephone dating.
Friends and Enemies[]
Mayumi may have been friends with Fumiyo and Yoshimi. It can be assumed she was on bad terms with students she bullied, such as Noriko, though she could've disliked just Noriko specifically. Her relationship with the rest of the class is unknown, although it is possible she could have been friendly with Mitsuko Souma and Hirono Shimizu, due to her connection with Yoshimi. However, she was on good terms with most of the boys such as Shuya Nanahara and Kazushi Niida.
Before the Program[]
Before Kitano resigned, Class B decided to take a day off and skip school, Mayumi included; she attended the basketball game against Class A, and celebrated when Class B won. Mayumi decided to go on the class trip; while on the bus, she most likely fooled around with her friends or pored over a catalog. Mayumi fell asleep after breathing in a sleeping gas pumped into the bus; she was then transported to an island and fitted with an explosive collar.
Mayumi, along with the rest of the class, woke up in a classroom in the island’s school. Unnerved by the presence of Shogo Kawada and Kazuo Kiriyama, Mayumi rushed over to the window to watch a helicopter land in front of the school. Mayumi was shocked to see that Kitano had returned. When Kitano asked the class if they knew the BR Act law, Mayumi kept quiet, obviously knowing the law, but afraid to say it aloud. Mayumi was horrified upon seeing Masao Hayashida's corpse. When Fumiyo Fujiyoshi was killed, Mayumi panicked and ran for the door trying to escape before running towards the back of the classroom when the soldiers began firing. When Yoshitoki Kuninobu's collar got activated, Mayumi ran around the room trying to evade him.
When Mayumi's name was called, she grabbed her school bag and ran towards the front of the room; she caught her supply bag and ran out of the school.
During the Program[]
Mayumi, dead after being shot in the neck and knee by Yoshio Akamatsu.
Mayumi is the unfortunate student that finds herself victim to Yoshio Akamatsu after he decides to snipe at students leaving the school from a hill overlooking the school (it seems that when she left the school Yoshio shot an arrow through her neck and panicked). Mayumi seemed to wander around in search of another student and came across Shuya, asking him what was in her neck before collapsing and dying. Another arrow is fired at Shuya and missed, embedding into Mayumi's knee.
Etymology[]
- The name Mayumi means "real, genuine" (真) (ma) and "archery bow" (弓) (yumi).
- Mayumi's surname Tendo means "heaven, paradise" (天堂).
Trivia[]
- This is the only version of Mayumi to say something while she is dying; in fact, this is the only version of Mayumi who says anything at all.
